Welcome, Class!

I hope that you are invigorated during your first week as a student at RISD, and that you are eagerly learning to SEE with new eyes. In order to provide inspiration and reference during your explorations this week, I wanted to make available for you this color image of Vladimir Kozlinsky's poster. It is a fine example of how the Elements of Design (in particular, line, form, size, scale, positive/negative space, and color) are applied to achieve a great sense of balance, rhythm, and movement, and an interesting shift in point-of-view. Remember that working with these elements effectively is your objective as you look through your sketchbooks to combine ideas and images for your final 15" x 15" composition.

Please note that by referencing this poster, I am not insisting that you work in a manner that is stylistically similar to Kozlinsky's. It is merely a wonderful visual reference for how to simplify forms, and for the possibilities of building a composition.
