Janet Cardiff
Cardiff's "walks" allow participants to have an intimate experience with her work in a public space. Using handheld cd players, particpants walk in a designated area and are influenced and guided by the sounds Cardiff has created. She subtly uses sonic devices and spacialization to encourage extremely specific interactions in the space.
Her Long Black Hair:
In this piece, listeners walk through Central Park listening to the cd provided and carrying photographs. Cardiff leads the walkers through the park to points related to the narrative and information given in in the cd. The audio is composed of a variety of sources and provides narratives, historical facts and purely sonic experiences. The mill yard project will also use a variety of sources and styles to provide participants with information. Personal stories, conjecture and hopes for the furture and historical anecdotes will be used the project in a stlye very similar to Cardiff's. However, Cardiff's ability to lead, coax and align participants with the story is unparralled and will not be replicated in the mill project. A more open model similar to Teri Rueb's piece Drift, will be used.
