Hope@RISD
The first semester of my after school programming took place at RISD. The aim of this particular program was to provide portfolio-preparation support for Hope Arts High School seniors who are applying for art college. My colleagues Sara Kinsey, Adrienne Gagnon and I organized and led projects that would help them create portfolio-quality works within a fairly limited time.

The Book Project
Providing students with donated books, I asked them to modify one based on general ideas surrounding books.

(L to R)
John chose a magazine ad about child abuse. He drew "stitches" on the child's face with red ink. His sophisticated design resembles tribal tattoos, a different kind of scar that signifies pride and resilience.

Maya developed her piece around the idea of education in Africa. The continent is carved out using a knife. The red suggests blood, as well as power. Some parts of the paper are burned, making a connection between the many civil wars taking place in many African countries, depriving children of quality education.
