A Process of Protest: Prints and Drawings of Kathe Kollwitz

RISD Museum

Although political themes are usually lower on my list of interests when it comes to viewing art, the emotional content of Kathe Kollwitz’s work immediately drew me deeply into her world. She communicates the struggle and grief of a distant time in a foreign country in such magnitude that it becomes instantly universal. Her depiction of hands, especially, makes me emotional as if I survived a war. But there is a sense of strength, of resilience that echoes throughout her work that tells us how much she loves humans, whatever condition they are in.
