During the 1970s and 80s I studied art at the University of Colorado, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Mass Art, and a number of other schools, however my art career was put on hold while I worked in the surf and windsurf industries for twenty years. After my father died in 2005, my life came to a crossroads when I found myself at a point where I was poised to take on a great deal more business responsibility. It was then that I decided to walk away from selling windsurfers and spend my remaining time alive in pursuit of my artistic muse.
I've had some good response to my landscapes in oil. (Richard Grosvenor has said I show "great promise".) I've had some interest in portraits too. I have recently been trying my hand at printmaking. I love the surprise of pulling a proof from the press. I’m continually exploring other media and I’m not locked into any one particular style, which may or may not be a good thing. I have done some political cartoons for a local paper, but the pay was minimal and I decided my time could best be spent other ways. I have also done some murals and illustrations.
A great deal of my inspiration comes from my great-great-grandfather, Stephen Alonzo Schoff (1818-1904), a well-known American engraver in his time, but for some reason his life and work has been largely forgotten, even within our branch of the family tree. Around 2004 I did some searching on the Internet and got an inkling of just how talented and respected Mr. Schoff was. His works are housed in the Smithsonian, the MFA, and the New York Public Library. He was friends with Asher B. Durand, John F. Kensett, William Morris Hunt, and many other well known artists. His best known images included portraits of such literary luminaries as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Walt Whitman, George Eliot, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I have been doing some research into Stephen Schoff and have collected a fair amount of his artwork. I’d be happy to share my information with anyone interested.
I'm married to a fantastic wife who is a school librarian and we have a pretty daughter who loves to dance. I’m currently enrolled in an Anatomy class at RISD, and hope to continue my education there. Showing my work in galleries has been a bit hit or miss, but I have had a number of pieces hung at the Spring Bull in Newport. Please feel free to contact me for any reason.
