My coat collection was inspired by the German Expressionist films that came out of the Weimar Republic, most notably The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The sets for the films were constructed by breaking and distorting the lines of buildings and scenery to create a disjointed atmosphere. I strove to take this element and apply it to the human form, distorting and reducing through the use of bias cut and paneling to shatter and rebuild a masculine silhouette. The coat itself is constructed out of 1/4" thick industrial felt which lent itself well for a sculptural approach, allowing the lines and form of the human form to be built up off the body.
