For this fall/winter sportswear collection, I was inspired by the colors of Venice, Titian's portraits, and Renaissance armour.

Wintersession 2008: Fashion Icon.

Illustrations on cold-press watercolor paper, colored with watercolor and colored pencil. Flats illustrated with Micron markers.
Mounted on 14" x 18" museum board. Missing fabric swatches.

For this assignment, we were asked to select a "fashion icon," a designer who made an enormous impact on fashion, research his/her designs and make a short presentation on him/her, and finally design a collection as if you were asked to take that designer's place. I chose Cristobal Balenciaga, the founder of Balenciaga.

The colors for the collection were inspired by the center image in the mood board: very rich, slightly dark and gritty colors like a deep cerulean blue, slate, grape, black, and a crimson red. The mood of the collection was, again, a little bit dark and gritty, but at the same time, very glamorous and sexy, like the femme fatale who sits by herself in some smoky film noir lounge.

I tried to incorporate that woman and Balenciaga's old designs together to create this collection. Like Balenciaga, I tried to keep to very sleek silhouettes and clean lines, with some embellishment that made it a little more special. I incorporated a lot of unfinished hems and ruffles that looked like they'd been shredded into pieces to create that moody feeling and also to add interest to the sleek silhouettes.
