GaPS - a performance for two dancers in an outdoor environment
Performers: Nicola Visser and Bruce Hooke
Choreography: Nicola Visser, Bruce Hooke and Emma Hogarth
Mediascape programming: Donko Jeliazkov
(This performance: Providence, RI, Dec 2008)
This performance seeks to highlight the gaps in the GPS network. Armed with a GPS device, two dancers emerge from the pedestrian environment of downtown Providence. They move along a straight trajectory described by a choreographed phrase. As they move through the urban space, a custom mediascape installed on the device plays a sound each time a new location is "fixed." This cue alerts the dancers to cease performing the phrase, reset their bodies on a new trajectory, and begin the phrase again. The dancers thus repeat the phrase in the spatial and temporal GaPS created between GPS readings. The structure of the choreography is thereby determined by the GaPS in locative media technology.
